Why does negative behaviour continue?

It works. There is some kind of payoff, some type of momentary satisfaction that is derived from not changing. The reward might be financial or psychological. Some people will continue unproductive behaviour to seek approval, acceptance, praise, or love. Others continue their unacceptable actions out of pride, greed or a sense of personal fulfilment. They may oppress others with their need to always be right because they treasure being right- even if it destroys a relationship.


It's easy to see the difference between a good swimmer and a bad a swimmer. A good swimmer does places one hand after another in the water following the center line of his or her body. The hand strokes seem to fall one on top of the other as they move forward.

Meanwhile a poor swimmer does not stroke following the center line. The person's hands hit the water right in front of each shoulder. When they get into trouble, their hand strokes begin to fail about, even going out to their sides. They are 'grasping for straws' or anything that will keep them affiliation.

Meanwhile, a good lifeguard will not attempt to rescue a poor swimmer until he or she comes to the end of his or her strength and gives up. Rescuers know if they get too close, the swimmer will have enough strength to drown them in the mist of the rescue operation. The same is often true for those encountering emotional drowning. They must come to the place where they "hurt" enough to be helped.

Know this; in reality, change is not an option. It's an ongoing, lifelong, daily experience. How we change is our option. Change begins by choosing, and choosing creates more change. You and you alone and the author of the choice. Now, what choices are you going to make? Always ask our Creator.

For you to make positive changes in your life you must begin by doing something differently- especially if what you are doing presently is not bringing you happiness. It's our minds that think either positive thoughts or negative thoughts. We can think about how much we resent people or how much we appreciate them. We can dwell on the unfairness of our circumstances or the blessings in our circumstances. We can see a thorn with every rose or a rose with every thorn. We can see a difficulty with every opportunity or an opportunity with every difficulty.

Do you know that the mind is like the engine on a train? Yes! It gives direction to our thinking and behaviour. The will is the motivator for the engine. It's the coal car supplying energy to the mind. The will is extremely powerful; it can override the promptings of the mind and force action in a different path than was originally chosen.

Then the feelings: the feelings are like the caboose on the train. They follow where the mind and the will lead. And if they had emotions down happy tracks, the feelings will be unhappy. Often the feelings shout out which direction to go but if we let our feelings choose our track we may find ourselves on an unpleasant road.

Scientifically proven, an object that is in motion tends to stay in motion. This is also true for our emotions. Negative emotions tends to stimulate and keep in motion negative emotions.
