One morning the crown princess Nnuego jumped into Efe's room to see her half sister, little princess Mmasi. As she went close and was about to touch her, the mother quickly walked in "you evil child! Don't ever come near my baby again," she roared. Efe had the knack of conceit in everything that concerned her.
Nnuego obeyed and gently walked away. She understood that her step-mother was not hearty, but would always like to offer her a helping hand, just to please her. However, the help she offered to propitiate her would be met with ingratitude and embarrassment. Her behaviour made Nnuego to feel unwanted and rejected.
The worst maltreatment Nnuego received from Efe was on one faithful day when Nnuego went into the kitchen to collect some fruit. She perceived the smell of a burning soup and brought the pot of soup down. Immediately, Efe walked in and instantly accused Nnuego of poisoning her soup. She deliberately broke her head with a big soup spoon and ran away leaving her unconscious on the floor.
Ure, the crown queen of Ojemba heard a loud cry and came into the kitchen only to find her daughter in a parlous state. She quickly took her to the hospital where she regained consciousness. The incident made Ure to believe that Efe was revolting against them although Efe fabricated the story to prove her innocence.
Not too long, Nnuego sat for the Common Entrance Examination and that very year she also took her First School Leaving Certificate Examination. She passed her entrance examination. Her success marveled everyone. Even her parents were very proud of her, especially her father. He promised to train her to any level of education she desired.
Efe felt neglected and showed her apprehension towards Ojemba's closeness with Ure reasoning that if their relationship should continue like this, she might be thrown out of the palace one fateful day. Her insecurity was prompted by the fact that he kept on treating her as an outcast. What he only cared about her was providing her with her monetary needs. Due to her jealousy, she planned evil by being involved in diabolic activities.
She collaborated with Igbudu, her secret lover to kidnap and assassinate Nnuego. At first, it seemed to work out successfully for them, but metamorphosed. It happened that after the kidnapping must have taken place, one young and handsome boy among them divulged their mission to Nnuego. As they were about to slaughter Nnuego, a car tyre burst aloud like that of a gunshot. This made the kidnappers to run away and abandoned her tied to a tree.
The man whose car got flat tyre approached that direction to urinate. His name was Ikedi. He was a kind hearted man who loved children very much, despite the fact that he had none since ten years in wedlock. He was in his forties and a graduate. Ikedi worked as a civil servant. His wife, Okwuchi, owned one of the expensive boutiques in town. They built a single storey building which was magnificent. The ground floor was rented out to tenants, while they occupied upstairs alone.
The upstairs which they occopied was well embellished with state-of-the art furniture. Though they really cost him a fortune, they were attractive. In the sitting room, there were a nice cushion and pictures on the wall. The guest room was well decorated and equipped in such a way that visitors could feel comfortable.
Ikedi was on his way back to town after seeing his people in the village before he stopped to urinate near the direction Nnuego was.
Luckily, he saw Nnuego and decided to rescue the poor girl as a good samaritan. He finally took her to the car and replaced the burst tyre after which he drove with her to the town. Actually, Nnuego found him roguish at first, but still expressed her gratitude for his kind gesture. Read also the Love of princess Nuella
