The Weeping Lecturer

In the morning, the heavens opened and it began to rain. Bella grabbed her umbrella to get to school, as she walked out of the hostel the first

The Stranded Stranger a short story

As he walked home, it started raining but he did not bother. He needed the cold touch of the rain to calm his nerves. For him, nothing mattered anymore, he could hear cars blasting their horns to him as he walked down home, but he cared less. As he walked down, his eyes beheld a big sign post. It was advertising for an experienced medical doctor on his own professional field. At first, he thought it was not real. He wiped his eyes with his hand and read it again and again and decided to give it a trial. He needed the job so he prepared very well for the interview.  He performed absolutely very well at the interview and there and then the job was given to him. The hospital provided him with an office and accommodation which helped him settle down without hitches.

He was happy to have relocated from his farther base in Ikeja to Ilorin. Leaving all sad memories behind. When he received his first salary he decided to invite Flora so that she would share his joy with him. Initially, Flora hesitated to go. She was troubled with the thought of what people would say, especially what Annabel would think if she saw her with her ex‐lover. But after cogitating on the matter, she decided to go  after all Annabel openly rejected Chris and should be stupid to be angry if eventually the two were seen together by Annabel, Chris and her, as long as she was concerned, she was only their intermediary and peace maker, nothing more and nothing less.

Curiously, Flora decided to honor Dr. Chris' invitation. After asking people questions for directions. She was able to locate his house which was located in a high density part of Ilorin. As she picked her way through the crowd, she noticed that most residents of the town had small shops in front of their houses; she observed that the people were hardworking.

Dr. Chris lived in a small estate off the busy part of the town. With the address Chris sent to her, she was able to locate his apartment, and knocked on the door. Chris opened the door to see Flora, she was looking very beautiful in her trendy gown and his heart skipped a bit. Flora attempted to avoid his eyes because she noticed that his eyes were all over her. She was nervous and somewhat happy at Chris' unhidden admiration for her.

"You are welcome," Chris managed to say.

"Thank you," she replied. " I hope you did not find it difficult to locate here?"

"Not quite," she replied.

"Please do have a seat," he led her to a seat.

"What can I offer you? Food? Or would you prefer to take your bath first?" Asked Chris.

"Either of the two will be ok," she replied with a smile.

"Well, I guess, I will fix your bath first," he replied and withdrew to the inner room towards the bathroom and later returned to inform her that her bath was ready.  After taking her bath, she emerged wearing a night gown. Chris was already waiting at the dinning table. She took her position opposite him and attempted to dish out food but Chris stood up immediately,  "please Flora, I am your host, you are my guest, and it would be my pleasure to serve you." Flora raised her hands in resignation and forced a smile which expressed all over her body. As Chris opened the big plate containing the food and her appetite increased.

"I hope the food tastes as good as its aroma," she asked.

" I hope so too," he replied seriously.  After dishing out the food, they sat eating silently. Flora was very hungry and was preoccupied with the munching of the food in her plate that she didn't notice all along that Chris wasn't eating but was looking at her beautiful face admirably. When she looked up to take a glass of water, she caught him looking at her intently and their eyes glued at each other's gaze. Slowly, Flora's face dropped feeling uncomfortable within her. The food choked her up continuously.  After a while, Chris suddenly asked her a question in a riddle, "I have a shoe and I gave it to someone as a gift, later the lucky person rejected it and brought it back to me, then I decided to give the same shoe to another person," he paused and continued. "Now if you are the second lucky one will you accept the shoe?"

"Oh, Roger, what do you expect me to say?"

I expect you to answer me sincerely," he anxiously replied.

"Well," she began, if the first person actually rejected the shoe, if I were to be the second lucky person and I like the shoe, yes I will accept it," she said. With her reply Chris face lit up in a smile, joy overwhelmed him.

"What is the question all about," Flora found herself asking Chris.

"Later, please do finish your food; it's getting cold. I will show you the way that leads to the guest room when you are done."

When Flora woke up in the morning Chris was already out to work. She decided not to leave until she had seen him; Chris was happy to meet her at home and decided to continue what he had started.

"I would want us to be closer than we were. I mean I would like to have a serious relationship with you," he said to her.

"I hope you have not lost your sense of decency, Chris," she replied.

How do you mean," he asked.

"The last time I checked, you were Annabel's friend," she replied.

"No, the last time I check, Annabel dumped me and you were the one around to console me and made me strong enough to walk through the path of Annabel's rejection," he replied.

"Which means your interest in me is to show gratitude to me for being there for you in your moment of grief?" She asked, her face expressing her disappointment and curiosity.

" No! No!! What will people say? What will my friend think of me? Maybe she would think something secret must have been going on between the two of us under her nose without her knowing." Whatever she thinks is not important, but what is the truth should be our concern," he answered defensively.

"Who would believe us? She shouted.

"You see everything that happened, I did not leave Annabel she was the one that left me.

"Please Chris let's pretend this conversation never happened, that it was a dream which faded away as we wake up from sleep" she replied seriously.

"No, it is not a dream, but as real as life and death, for I truly want to love you and be loved by you."

Desperately, he consciously reached out his hand and pulled her close and held her glued to him. He traced her lips with his tongues and they began caressing with their lips hungrily.  The whole incident occurred to her like a wave and a sudden gush of emotion which she could not control. The more she tried to avoid it, the more she desired to participate in the act. At a time, she closed her eyes to participate, moving near  his lips, but she would divert his cheek and be pricked by his beard. The sensation was great and she almost lost her self-control. Consciously she began to regain her "guard" and reluctantly began to push him away.

"May  God forgive me," she began to pray. It was actually his witty words that got her carried away. "Can I ever forgive myself for this mischief?" She asked herself, and angrily kicked her right leg on the wall without minding the resultant pain. Within her, she must keep her moral sanity; no pressure can make her subdue the sense of purity to anyone who may wish to lure her immorally. She was determined to serve as a guide to others as she was trained at home but her faith had fallen the moment she allowed Chris in her life, somehow she began to realize that the process and experience she was passing through was inevitable as part of life.

Moral lesson:

Always be morally conscious and don't allow yourself to be trapped by mischievous act.

Things you should expect when you connect with your spot

Get out of the rat race. After all, if you win, you will simply be the big rat. Stop running in the competition. The only person you should compete with is yourself. "how well am I performing in my leadership spot," is what you should ask yourself. You have to know that the battery does not compete with a spark plug, because the battery knows the spark plug can never be a battery, and so on. They sit in the engine in their spots and serve the engine their gift without competing

Why does negative behaviour continue?

It works. There is some kind of payoff, some type of momentary satisfaction that is derived from not changing. The reward might be financial or psychological. Some people will continue unproductive behaviour to seek approval, acceptance, praise, or love. Others continue their unacceptable actions out of pride, greed or a sense of personal fulfilment. They may oppress others with their need to always be right because they treasure being right- even if it destroys a relationship.

Adding value to other people is the work of a positive influencer

As you move up to the higher levels of influence and become an active influencer, you can begin to have a positive influence on people and add value on their lives. That's true for any positive influencer. The baby-sitter who reads to the child encourages him to love books and helps him become a lifelong learner. The teacher who puts his faith, confidence, and love on a child helps the child to feel valued and good about herself. That boss who delegates to the employees and gives them authority as well as responsibility enlarges their horizons and empowers them to become better workers and people. Even the parents who know how to give their children grace and when to, also help them to stay open and communicative. All of these people add lasting value to the lives of other people. One thing is this, we don't know what kind of influence you have on others, today as you read this article. Your actions may touch the lives of thousands of people. Perhaps you use the opportunity
