The purpose of peacebuilding is to maintain and sustain relationships among people locally and globally thus engendering sustainable peace. Indication of a successful peacebuilding is creating an environment supportive of self-sustaining, durable peace through reconciling opponents and most importantly integrate civil society.
It may also interest us to know that National Youth Service Corps is one of the suitable schemes and the true example of a peacebuilding process initiated in Nigeria with the aim of achieving oneness and absence of racial prejudice. Youths have the major role to play as Pacesetters and as vibrate young people and during the NYSC year in our various PPAs we are expected to find out the problems of the communities—and where there is any form of conflict between communities or within a community it is our duty to resolve the conflict. We can do this through; dialogue, discussion, reconciliation, peace talk, negotiation etc. It is also our duty to address underlying structural and societal issues.
May I also remind us that peacebuilding is an approach to the entire set of interrelated efforts that support peace. This is with the aim to strengthen national capacities at all levels for conflict prevention and resolution.
It is our duty as youths to serve our nation right. May we also be reminded that to fulfill the mission of this course we have to implore peacebuilding—fighting conflict should be our priority.
Though, the task of peacebuilding includes a wide range of efforts by diverse actors not only in government but international levels to address the root cause of violence and ensure that civilians have freedom and absence of fear and humiliation. Peacebuilding could take place before, during or after conflict/ any form of violence—this should be our pursuit to have a better and a hundred percent peaceful and healthy nation.
Finally, peacebuilding efforts aims to change beliefs, attitudes and behaviours to transform the short and long term dynamics between individuals and groups toward a more stable peaceful co-existence. I believe that peacebuilding is an invaluable and one of the functions/services we must render during the course of service to our fatherland to ensure safety, protection of lives, preservation of values and promotion of human race. This act is applicable in any nation to ensure peace.
Peacebuilding pledge: we pledge to be Pacesetter, to develop a new nation of absolute peace and tranquility, to embrace and love ourselves because with love we stand and lift our nation high.
