How proverbs oil our minds

In no language do proverbs play more important roles than in Igbo. Proverbs lift weak minds and teach us morality as well. Here are some Igbo proverbs which I translated in English so do well to enjoy and learn deep meanings from them—

when a man does not know where the rain starts beating him he will not know where the rain dries up.

They don't fight kingship, kingship runs in the blood. Instead a child is begged to be a king.

No one drags what belongs to another and gets away with it.

A child who keeps pointing out at a direction if the father is not there the mother must be there.

The heart of a man is evil. But it can be dangerous when put at work.

Be careful with your choice of words and thoughts lest they drive you into unexpected.

Always try and do something special and extraordinary from the normal way of doing things.

A toad does not just run in a day time for nothing. But the worse that can happen is for a man to chase shadows.

Don't regret when you miss a chance, because there are chances out there.
When you miss an opportunity try another opportunity. There are opportunities yet to venture.

When one door closes another opens. Don't give up because you fail the first test. Always learn to try again, again and again. See also, "Do you really have to quit?"

Don't stiff your neck out for someone who doesn't value you.

In Igbo proverb says use the day time to find a dark goat because once it gets dark you can't identify the goat.

Utilize your time effectively to achieve productive outcome.

It is better to remove the hand of a chimpanzee from a pot of soup before it becomes the hand of a human being.

In Igbo culture, the man who gets married is counted responsible. He who first to have a child is seen as a man for he has gotten a successor.

You don't have to throw a stone in a glass house because it would definitely break one.

Don't throw a stone in a market place because you don't know and can't predict it might hit your own person.

Be careful of evil counsel. Be positive and be yourself always. Don't allow yourself to be deceived by others. Always do the right thing.

You don't tussle for kingship. Kinship finds you.

The most deadly creature is he that doesn't speak out his mind—green snake on a green grass.

Mind your business. "Focus is all you need to succeed" "Risk taking man"

He never believed it could be any other thing, he took some cubes of sugar and showed to her face. A minute later, his daughter clung to him, he hurriedly pushed her away, "isn't it the way sugar daddies do it with their sugar babies?" Mr Steve in amazement lamented, "hey! World is tearing apart, civilization! Awful understanding of kids!" "No dad, it's falling apart and we fall with it!" Maria said. Mr Steve collapsed in wonder...
